These days, there are several terms that you might come across – you will hear life coach and leadership coach and a whole other range of coaches. But how many of us actually know the difference between all of these?
Let’s start with career and diversity:
A diversity coach is someone who is focused on fostering inclusive environments within an organization and address issues that might be related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Their intent is to help create a more inclusive and diverse work environment, that nurtures a healthier work environment. They work towards promoting a better understanding and a greater respect based on collaboration between people; differentiation cannot arise on the basis of race, culture, gender, sexual orientation and ethnicity.
Unlike a business coach, their expertise will lie in areas such as unconscious bias training, conflict resolution and putting into placestrategies for creating a more inclusive workplace.
On the other hand, a career coach will be more focussed on helping an individual scale greater heights in terms of their own personal career. They will help individuals make more informed choices, which will allow them to grow in their professional lives and better navigate the job markets. This type of coach will spend a lot of time with the individual, trying to understand their strengths and weaknesses and then creating strategies that will work in tandem with those. From helping them build better resumes to teaching them how to ace interviews, there is a lot that a career coach can help with.
While a diversity expert might work with organisations as a whole, a career coach will mostly likely work with individuals, especially those who are fresh out of college or are looking for a change in their professional roles.
